Polar Training Course
We are happy to introduce an advanced polar training course, run by two of the most recognized polar explorers in the world. This course is for anyone who has an interest in learning more about arctic and North Pole travel. It is a must for anyone who is serious about attempting a North Pole expedition or arctic travel. The course will be lead by Richard Weber and Josée Auclair. Richard and Josée have been traveling together in the Arctic and at the North Pole for more than 20 years. This team has developed the recipe for polar success. Richard has slept more than 550 nights on the Arctic Ocean . He has trekked from Canada and Russia to the Geographic North Pole a record, six times. Josée has lead 6 North Pole expeditions and 1 South Pole expedition.
The course will be held in Alcove, Quebec. (50 km from Ottawa ).
The course will cover the following topics:
- Polar travel philosophy
- History
- Geography
- Climate change and implications for modern explorers
- Logistics
- Navigation
- Daily routines, travel techniques
- Clothing
- Equipment
- Communications
- Safety, first aid
- Polar bears and wildlife
- Electronic equipment in cold weather (cameras, video, etc)
- Dry suits and crossing open water
- Kitting
- Nutrition and food preparation
Itinerary
Day 1 |
Morning in the classroom, items to be covered: Polar travel, Philosophy, History, Geography, Climate change and implications for modern explorers, Logistics, Daily routines, Travel techniques.
Afternoon: Snowshoes and snowshoeing |
Day 2 |
Morning in the classroom, items to be covered: Clothing, Sleeping bags and systems, Tents
Afternoon: Basics of skiing |
Day 3 |
Morning in the classroom: focus on First aid and safety, Communications, Polar bears, and Navigation.
Afternoon: The basics of kiting (this maybe moved to another time slot if the wind is not cooperative) |
Day 4 |
Morning in the classroom: Food, Nutrition and Food preparation
Afternoon: Trying the dry suits in a lake
Night will be spent sleeping in a tent |
Day 5 |
Morning in the classroom: Look at other gear such as Skis, Sleds and Electronic gear in cold.
Afternoon: Combine our skiing/snowshoeing skill in pulling a sled.
The night will be spent in the tent, including cooking the evening meal |
Day 6 |
Morning workshop session: Expedition preparation, Sled packing, Outdoor navigation
Afternoon Departure from The Polar Center |
Notes:
Evening Programs will include expedition movies, slide presentations and group discussions

COSTS: $2500.00
Cost Includes: Course material, gear, instruction, 6 days lunch and 5 days supper and transportation
Cost does not include: Accommodation for the days 1 through 3. (Local hotel /B&B, information will be provided)
